About Cherese

Thanks for coming to my page.

Just to let you know some things about me. I am an author, wife and mother of two awesome kids. I have loved reading all my life and when I found out I could write my own stories, it was fantastic. In second grade I had a project where I wrote a story and then made it into a book. We used cardboard, yarn and wallpaper to make these little books. I still have mine more than 20 years later. It just reminds me of how creative a child is. I try to keep that youthful and effortless creativity in mind when I’m writing now. I think that is why I’m drawn to fantasy and science fiction and magic. I mainly write for young adult audiences, but I do have some adult fantasy/science fiction adventures as well.

The secret to my craft is that I’m the type of person who has the weirdest dreams that I not only remember but can sometimes control, and that is where many of the ideas for my stories come from. Elan Vital is a great example of a story idea that came from my subconscious mind. It is about two tween sisters who must discover on their own how to use the strengths they possess to save their world. My dream was fast-paced and I awoke energized and ready to complete the girls’ journeys. We don’t even use 100% of our brains, yet we can invent entire worlds and histories for a single character or an entire population in no time. Most times my mind moves faster than I can type.

I’m influenced by stories like my favorite, A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle, and writers like Octavia Butler and C.S. Lewis. I enjoy  J.R.R. Tolkien’s and J.K. Rowling’s series because of the detail and thought that went into producing those greatly interconnected characters and worlds.

My favorite movie is The Princess Bride. The book by William Goldman is also excellent. I liked the movie Stardust too. I can enjoy a good Star Trek episode/movie or Star Wars movies/book/TV show. I enjoyed James Cameron’s Avatar, Luc Besson’s The Fifth Element and not so well known Arthur and the Invisibles, Christopher Nolan’s Inception, many of the comic books made into movies, and pretty much any fantasy/adventure/magic/science fiction movie or book that has come out in the last 15 years. The movie experience gets better with each new release with what they can do with computer graphics. I think we’re really starting to see what the authors and screenplay writers were seeing in their heads without being limited by technology.

I’m really selective on the TV I watch. Shows I enjoy usually come on a kids network or the SyFy channel. But I really enjoyed Pushing Daisies on ABC a few years ago. I still miss it. I still watch cartoons and tween movies and TV shows, even without my kids. I mostly read juvenile and young adult fiction, but I do enjoy books with adult characters. I think Anne Rice’s writing is very poetic. I enjoy Mercedes Lackey’s ability to connect with the reader. And I also enjoy a good laugh. My second favorite book is The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and subsequent books by Douglas Adams which was mentioned by Octavia Butler as her gateway book to science fiction. I am also very much into BritComs (British Comedies) so the Red Dwarf series is among my very favorites. Anything out of the ordinary draws me. And when I can laugh out loud at a book or a movie, so much the better. I try to keep a sense of humor when I write and I sometimes think of the spoofs they’re going to make about the movie adaptations of my books.

I currently have two self-published young adult sci-fi/fantasy books out, Countercharm and Countercharm 2: Of Stars and Dreams. Both available from Infinity Publishing, Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com. Check out the excerpts from both books by clicking above.

Thanks again for following me to where Vines lead you to fantastic worlds and adventure.

I wrote a book when I was little and used paper and yarn to make it appear like a book! Looks like we have something in common outside of writing and reading!
